I love this series, and this was a fun romp. But I'm also an old film buff, so what should have been a double treat (these delightful characters in '30s Hollywood) didn't quite live up to my hopes because of pretty obvious errors regarding Hollywood in 1934. The HOLLYWOOD sign would not have been an internationally known icon in 1934; in fact, the sign would still have spelled out HOLLYWOODLAND, advertising a real estate development of that name (the actual origin of the sign). Characters refer to "the talkies" as if the transition from silent to sound films were still ongoing, but in fact no one in 1934 would have talked about "talkies" as if there was any other kind of movie still being made after 1930 at the outside. No one but Charlie Chaplin was still making silent movies (and those silent only in the sense of not having dialogue--they had synchronous musical sound tracks and some sound effects), but someone in the book says to him that even he has made talkies (he did not do so until 1940, and even then, it was not a conventional talkie). Finally, Errol Flynn is presented as a known star in the book, but in fact he would not make his film debut until the following year, 1935.I love this series so much, but I love old movies, too. I just wish someone had done some basic research when taking the series to a new locale for this book. The series is a great one, but this particular book is not the best of the lot. Spending time with Georgie Rannoch is always a treat, but sometimes her mother becomes annoying, if not downright hateful, as do other minor characters. I even felt that Georgie herself was borderline hateful in her attitude towards her inept maid. I realize that the '30s were a different time, but Georgie comes across as not likeable in several scenes. Also, her relationship with Darcy O'Mara is becoming tiresome with the lack of romance, as well as his and her inability to plan for the future. In short, I love this series, but perhaps it's time to think a bit more about Georgie becoming more of a modern girl, for her time.
